What Athens Costs
An Athens trip cost divides oddly: the food is among the cheapest in western Europe and the entries are not. One ticket takes €30 and a very good dinner takes €18. This page costs a day four ways, prices a three-night trip end to end, and names the three places the money actually leaks. Entries are official prices read in Q3 2026; hotel bands were read from Google Hotels on 2 September 2026. The wider plan is on the Athens city guide homepage.
Quick answer A day, a trip, and the three leaks
Reckon €45 to €55 a head on a sightseeing day in Athens before the hotel, and about €210 to €250 for three days. Food is cheap and entries are not: the Acropolis alone is €30 of the total.
Key takeaways
- A day, four ways costs the same day for a careful traveller, a comfortable one, a couple and a family.
- Three nights, end to end adds the room, the airport and the fee nobody quotes.
- Where the money leaks names three things, and none of them is a scam.
- Entries are the same all year now — the winter discount on state sites was abolished, so only the hotel moves with the season.
- The cheapest genuinely good Athens day costs about €15: two hills, the guard, the garden and a pita. The free day sets it out.
A sightseeing day, costed four ways
The same day — one major site, one museum, lunch, dinner, transport — at four levels. Entries are official prices read on 1 September 2026; food figures are typical rather than quoted.
| Item | Careful | Comfortable | Couple, each | Family of four |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Entries | €30 (one site) | €50 (site + museum) | €50 | €60–90 total |
| Lunch | €4 pita | €12–15 taverna | €12 | €25–35 total |
| Dinner | €10 souvlaki | €18–20 shared plates | €18 | €35–45 total |
| Coffee and water | €4 | €8 | €8 | €12 |
| Transport | €1.20 | €4.10 | €4.10 | €10–20 total |
| Per head | about €49 | about €95 | about €92 | about €50 each |
Two things stand out. The gap between careful and comfortable is almost entirely food and a second entry — the transport is a rounding error in a city this walkable. And a family day costs less per head than a couple's, because children's entries are close to nothing: Athens with kids has the categories.
Three nights, end to end
Two adults, three nights, the three-day itinerary. Hotel bands are the middle half of the rates Google Hotels returned on 2 September 2026 for one midweek October night; entries are official prices. Per couple unless stated.
| Item | Lower | Higher | Note |
|---|---|---|---|
| Room, 3 nights | €186 (Exarchia band) | €576 (Kolonaki band) | Six districts priced |
| Entries, 3 days | €180 | €228 | The rock, both museums, both Agoras, the Olympieion |
| Food, 3 days | €180 | €260 | Shared plates; a pita lunch at the lower end |
| Airport, both ways | €22 (two metro singles each way) | €80 (two taxis) | The airport arithmetic |
| City transport | €40 (two 3-day tickets) | €40 | Includes both airport metro rides |
| Accommodation fee | Not published | Not published | Per room per night; see the fee |
| Three nights, two people | about €600 | about €1,150 | Before flights and before drinks |
The room is the swing factor and it is the one thing on this list you choose freely: three nights in Exarchia against three in Kolonaki is a €390 difference for a twenty-minute walk either way. Everything else varies by a third at most.

Where the money leaks
Three places, and not one of them is dishonest.
The terraces with a view of the rock
Restaurants on the main lanes of Plaka and on the Monastiraki roofs charge roughly double what the same plates cost two streets away. That is the price of the terrace, correctly set, and it is a legitimate thing to buy once. Buying it three nights running is where a food budget goes.
The airport taxi at the wrong hour
€40 becomes €55 between midnight and 05:00, and the charge follows the time you arrive rather than the time you leave. Two people who could have paid €18 on the metro pay €55 because the flight landed at half past eleven. From the airport does the arithmetic by group size.
Bundles for sites you will not enter
A multi-site pass is only cheaper than gates if you walk through the gates. Most visitors do the Acropolis, its museum and one Agora and stop — for that itinerary a five-site pass is paying for two entries you will never use. The combined-ticket page does that arithmetic by itinerary.
And one that is not a leak
The €30 Acropolis ticket. It is the single biggest line on any Athens day and it is the thing you came for; it is also a once-per-trip cost rather than a daily one. Nobody has ever regretted it.
The cheapest genuinely good day
About €15 a head, and it is not a compromise.
The morning
Philopappos Hill and the Pnyx: free, no gate, no closing time, and the Parthenon view everyone recognises. An hour, and best early or late.
The middle
A pita wrap for about €4 on the Monastiraki grill streets, then the Varvakios central market, free to walk through and open to mid-afternoon Monday to Saturday. Then the changing of the guard at Syntagma on any hour, free.
The afternoon
The National Garden, free and shaded, out at the Zappeion, and the whole of Plaka including Anafiotika and Hadrian's Arch — all of it costs nothing.
The evening
Souvlaki in Psyri for about €10 and the lit rock from the street. Total: about €15 a head plus a €1.20 transport ticket. On the first or third Sunday of a winter month you can add the Acropolis and both Agoras for nothing — the free-entry page has the dates.
Paying, tipping and the small print
Practical, and briefly.
Cards, and where they are not
Euro, and cards are taken almost everywhere including taxis. The exceptions worth carrying coins for: the Panathenaic Stadium's €1.50 lavatory, which wants the exact amount; some kiosks; and the smaller island ferries. A €50 note is hard to spend in a souvlaki shop.
Tipping
Not obligatory and not ignored. Rounding up, or five to ten per cent on a proper restaurant meal, is normal. There is no expectation at a souvlaki counter or a kafeneio.
The accommodation fee
Charged per room per night on top of the rate, it varies by month and by category, and the tax authority does not publish the amount on the English pages we could read. Ask your property what it will be for your dates rather than being surprised at check-out — where to stay explains what is and is not known.
What does not cost extra
Tap water, which is safe. Bread and cover charges are usually itemised and small. Museum audio guides are included at the Panathenaic Stadium and via the app at state sites, so check before paying for one separately.
Athens costs: questions
Is Athens expensive for tourists?
Less than Rome or Barcelona to eat in and about the same to enter. Reckon €45 to €55 a head on a sightseeing day before the hotel — the day costed four ways splits it.
How much money do I need for a long weekend?
About €600 to €1,150 for two people over three nights including the room, entries, food and the airport, before flights. The room is the swing factor. Three nights, end to end itemises it.
What is the most expensive part of an Athens trip?
The room, then the entries. The Acropolis at €30 is the single largest ticket, and three nights in Kolonaki costs €390 more than three in Exarchia for a similar walk to the rock.
Can you visit Athens cheaply?
Yes — about €15 a head for a genuinely good day of hills, markets, the guard and a pita. The cheapest good day sets it out, and on a free winter Sunday you can add the sites for nothing.
Are things cheaper in winter?
Hotels are, noticeably. Tickets are not: the 50% winter discount on state sites was abolished and every official page now prints one price all year.
Is there a tourist tax?
A climate crisis resilience fee, charged per room per night rather than per person, varying by month and category. The amount is not published on the tax authority's English pages, so ask your property — where to stay explains the position.
