The best time to visit Athens is April, May, late September and October, and the reason is not only comfort: those are the months when the archaeological sites keep their long hours and the marble is bearable at midday. November to March is cheap, quiet and gives two free Sundays a month, at the cost of a three o'clock closing time. The four seasons, honestly
Each has a case, and each has a cost.
Spring: April and May
Mean daily temperatures of about 16 and 20°C, the long site hours starting on 1 April, and the countryside green — which matters if you are taking Delphi or the Argolid. Easter is the variable: Orthodox Easter moves and closes the state sites on the Sunday, and the week around it is busy and expensive. Check the date for your year before booking.
Summer: June to August
Close to 28°C in the daily mean, almost no rain, and the Acropolis with no shade whatsoever. It is entirely doable if you accept the shape it forces: sites before half past ten and after half past five, museums and lunch in the middle. August adds Greek holidays and some closures. Autumn: September and October
The best combination in the year. Mid-September onwards the heat breaks, the site hours are still long, the sea is warm enough for an island day, and the last weekend of September is free at every state site. October steps the hours down but stays comfortable to the end.
Winter: November to March
Wet — November and December are the two wettest months by a distance — and short: most sites close at 15:00, the Acropolis at 17:00. Against that: the lowest hotel rates of the year, no queues anywhere, two free Sundays a month, and the Acropolis Museum open to 22:00 on Fridays. For a museum-heavy trip it is genuinely the best time to come.
The dates that override the season
Four things that matter more than the weather.
Orthodox Easter
It moves each year and is usually not the Western date. The state sites close on the Sunday, the Acropolis Museum keeps short hours on Good Friday and Holy Saturday, and the whole country travels. A trip booked around a Western Easter can land on the Greek one.
The free days
6 March, 18 April, 18 May, the last weekend of September, 28 October, and the first and third Sunday of each month from November to March. A February Sunday is a gift; 18 May in warm weather is a queue. The free-entry page weighs each.
15 August and the holidays
The Dormition on 15 August is a national holiday and much of Greece is away from the cities. 28 October and 25 March are national holidays with parades, and 25 March closes the state sites while the Acropolis Museum gives free entry.
